Character Round-up: Ice Age 4 Continental Drift

$

Ice Age 4 latest installment opens today and people need to freshen up their memories about the characters from the herd we all loved since 2002.  Here is a character round-up for Ice Age 4: Continental Drift.

MANNY (Ray Romano)

As the world shifts around him, so does Manny’s family. Manny’s tendency to be overprotective spurs a terrible argument between him and daughter Peaches - just before Scrat splits the world apart, casting him out to sea and separating him from his family and herd. Now he vows to do everything he can to get back to his family and make amends with his daughter.

PEACHES (Keke Palmer)

With possums for uncles and two offbeat parents in Manny and Ellie, Peaches has grown into an adorable quirky teenage mammoth with a mind of her own. She’s experiencing her first crush on a cute mammoth named Ethan, but has yet to see that he’s the wrong guy. Peaches longs to prove to Manny that she’s no longer a baby, and can make good decisions on her own. With Manny gone, she and her mother have to lead the herd.

ELLIE (Queen Latifah)

When Manny, Diego and Sid are separated from the herd, it’s up to Ellie to take her husband’s place as the leader and help everyone find safe ground. She also must temporarily parent Peaches alone. Ellie remembers what it was like to be a teenager and understands her daughter’s first crush. But she must remind Peaches not to try to change to be accepted and be proud of the fact that she’s part possum.

SID (John Leguizamo)

Sid is excited when his long lost relatives arrive, seemingly happy to be reunited with him. But they leave just as quickly as they came, intentionally ditching his crotchety GRANNY. Granny is inadvertently swept out to sea with the trio, making Sid’s job surviving the adventure that much harder when he must take care of her every need along the way.

DIEGO (Dennis Leary)

Diego is at the top of his game and ready to help Manny with the adventure at hand. While at sea, Diego meets a female saber tooth pirate named, SHIRA, and begins to have a strange new feeling – love. Diego invites Shira to join the herd. But when she is unable to leave her life as a pirate, and he is forced to leave her behind, he wonders if he’s made the biggest mistake of his life.

SCRAT (voice/squeaks by Chris Wedge)

When Scrat finds a treasure map, he becomes a world explorer and embarks on his biggest adventure yet. Classic Scrat comedy ensues as Scrat painfully searches for the greatest nut treasure in recorded history.

But like any other sequels. New movie, new characters. Here are the new characters to be introduced in Continental Drift.

CAP’T GUTT (voiced by Peter Dinklage)

A prehistoric orangutan, Captain Gutt is a massive brute of a pirate who has taken advantage of the chaos caused by the Continental Drift to become the self-appointed Master of the Seas. Whether he’s swinging through the rigging, leading his pirate crew in a shanty or just being an all-around badass dude, Gutt absolutely loves being a pirate and taking whatever he wants in the world. But when Manny and his crew steals his ship and the bounty he has amassed, Gutt’s wrath knows no bounds and he becomes determined to find Manny and get revenge.

SHIRA (by Jennifer Lopez)

Lightning fast on her feet and equally quick-witted, this beautiful saber tooth pirate has become Gutt’s loyal first mate. After Diego and Manny capsize Gutt’s ship, Shira gets separated from the pirates and is shocked to discover that Gutt has no real loyalty to her. When Diego appeals to her join his motley crew, she has to make the decision to stick with Gutt or to join Diego, Manny and the herd.

ETHAN (Drake)
Teenage Mammoth heartthrob, Ethan is the object of Peaches’ first crush. He hangs out with the cool kids and is mildly amused by Peaches’ attention. At first Peaches is determined to do anything necessary to catch Ethan’s eye, but eventually she realizes he is more shallow than cool.

LOUIS (Josh Gad)

Peaches’ best friend is this soft-spoken, slightly nerdy molehog who is always dutifully by her side and eager to help, even if is to help her get closer to pretty boy Ethan. When Peaches’ heart is ultimately broken by Ethan, Louis secretly wishes she could see that he’s the one who adores her just as she is.

SID’S GRANNY (Wanda Sykes)

Sid’s crochety grandmother becomes a large part of the adventure after accidentally stowing away on the barge with Manny and the gang as they head out to sea. Extremely near sighted and highly opinionated, (a comedic combination) Granny causes loads of trouble for Sid and the guys, especially when she wanders off looking for her thought-to-be deceased pet, Precious.

FLYNN (Nick Frost)
Flynn’s a 4000 pound English elephant seal with a heart of gold and a head of sand. He’s as passionate about being a pirate as he is clueless. He doesn’t know his port from his aft – and almost never remembers that being a sea creature means he can swim. However, he makes up for what he lacks in intelligence with an abundance of enthusiasm. Whoever coined the phrase “ignorance is bliss” clearly met Flynn first.

RAZ (Rebel Wilson)

This tough, prehistoric Aussie Sheila kangaroo, is the crew’s resident weapons expert, hiding an arsenal of deadly bone swords in her pouch. Don’t mess with her….she’s just looking for a reason to party, and by party she means fight till you drop.

SQUINT (Aziz Ansari)

Squint packs an amazing amount of crazy into his diminutive, prehistoric rabbit frame. If he were more than three feet tall and his adorable bunny ears didn’t always seem to pop up when agitated, he might genuinely be terrifying. His two great passions are his bone knife and unprovoked acts of violence.

SILAS (Alain Chabat)

Perpetually perched on Capt. Gutt’s shoulder, this bird from the south of France packs a surprisingly dangerous airborne punch when he’s not scouting out trouble ahead.

So there you have it.  The friends and foes you will meet when you finally decide to see ice Age 4: Continental Drift.  Saw it several days ago and just like the first 3 movies, I enjoyed it a lot.  What is good about this franchise is they managed to preserve what makes the movie enjoyable and fun without us audience getting tired of the usual ingredients.  Sid's humor is still funny, Diego's machismo is still heroic and Manny and Ellie's chemistry is still glowing.  All of those things that makes the franchise a success is still there.  And yes the trouble maker Scrat will definitely make your day worthwhile.

Ice Age 4: Continental Drift is now showing in cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Jori on the Scene: God of Carnage Manila

Just reviving an old section on my blog.  I  stopped bragging about events that I attend and just leave my photos on Facebook or Tumblr but thanks to last night event, I'm convinced that they are still worth sharing on this blog specially if the people involved are just heavenly talented.

with the chaotic cast of God of Carnage Manila (L-R): Lea Salonga, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Me, Art Acuña and Adrian Pang.

One word for God of Carnage = sick!  But of course in a good way.  This show is not only funny but also an eye opener on several issues in life such as marriage, parenting, and even animal cruelty.  Though on a shallow analysis it is a enjoyable show, on a deeper note it is a thought provoking drama that people should not miss.  Running for a limited engagement of 2 weekends, God of Carnage is directed by Bobby Garcia from Atlantis Production.

So inspired by the latest movie and current Spider-man comic story "Spider-men", I created this cover fanart featuring Sam Raimi and Marc Webb's corresponding Spider-man.  I also want to toy with the idea of having this two version colliding either as foes or allies.  I know it will never happen but I hope this fanart will serve just a relic of my imagination.

Amazing Spider-man is still showing on all cinemas nationwide distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International..  Catch it while you can.

Do you think the magic is already over after reading the books and watching all the 8 movies?  Think twice because here comes the characters of our well-loved children's book back on a stage show to cast spells and poke fun on the J.K. Rowling best-seller.

Written and conceived by Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, Potted Potter is a huge challenge of condensing all the seven books in to 1 70-minute show. Like what I mentioned above, characters from the book will return plus fantastic appearance of magical creatures paired with joyful songs and ludicrous props. The show is first created back in 2005 as a 5 minute show for the official book launch of Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince. It then grew into a full blown show and finally premiered in Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2006. From that moment it starts touring all over the world including the successful run at the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Comedy Festival and New Zealand Comedy Festival in 2009.

Here are some testimonials about the show:

“Fabulously Funny! Will tickle the funny bone of every age group.”
-The London Daily Telegraph

“The single funniest thing I’ve seen in ages. You’re gonna love this show.”
-Toronto Star

“Cleverly appeals to both ardent fans and parents.”
-The Times, UK

“Gloriously irreverent. A very lovable romp through Rowling’s back catalogue.”
-Time Out, London – Critic’s Choice

“An absolute gift of a show… Funny and gloriously unpredictable.”
-The Stage, UK

“Blissfully funny, a winner in every way. This show is a crowd-pleaser.”
-The Guardian, UK

Now the show is coming to the Philippines next month. We will be having our chance to experience this fun and lively performance.  Here's the season details for the show for everybody's reference.

One of the best Musical we all loved is finally coming to Manila to give Filipinos a one of a kind experience of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber Extravaganza. Phantom of the Opera now comes in the country for more than a month of shows that will give most of us who haven't seen it live a taste of an authentic live performance of the well loved musical.

Known as the longest running musical both on West End and Broadway and recorded to be seen by approximately 130 million people worldwide. Thanks to Lunchbox Theatrical Production, we will be seeing the official touring cast for the first time on our local theaters. With almost 130 cast, crew and orchestra members and of course an excellent material, Phantom of the Opera is no doubt a show worth looking forward to.

“This touring production of The Phantom of the Opera is as fine as any version you might see in the West End or on Broadway—it is the same superb design, and we invest a great deal to ensure it is of the highest standards.” said Tim McFarlane, Managing Director of The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific.

Joining the international cast and orchestra are some of Manila’s talented local musicians who have been specially selected by Guy Simpson, the Musical Director during auditions conducted in Manila earlier this year. Alongside these Filipino musicians is the talented Filipino tenor, Dondi Ong, who will be the role of Piangi in some performances. Mr. Ong has trained at the UP College of Music gaining a degree in Music, majoring in Voice. He graduated as Magna Cum Laude and the class valedictorian. As a performer, he has played lead and prominent roles in various Filipino plays, zarzuelas and musicals and has travelled to the US, Europe and Japan to perform for foreign audiences.

For somebody like me who didn't have the luxury of going to Broadway and West End, I'm very thankful to Lunchbox Theatrical for bringing this show to our shores and let us Filipinos experience authentic company straight from outside the country specially from West End and Broadway. If you think you're a big Phantom of the Opera fan then you should not miss this because this might be the only chance you can see it on the flesh.

Produced by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, Phantom of the Opera opens on August 25 and extended until September 30 at the CCP Main Theater. For more infos and inquiry please refer to the season details below.

Oz the Great and the Powerful Trailer Premieres

After the the reveal of the first poster, Disney now releases the very first trailer for the much anticipated Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz: the Great and the Powerful.  Watch the video after the jump.

When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Rachel Weisz as Evanora the Wicked Witch of the East

Michelle Williams as Glinda the witch of the south

Mila Kunis as Theodora the witch of the West

I'm not really that excited about this film but after seeing the trailer, I kind of having a change of heart. Not only because of the promising visuals, the movie also have a good set of cast with Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz working side by side James Franco. With this 4 lead stars, I'm already decided that I'm putting my money on it.

What about you? What do you think about this Wizard of Oz prequel? Share it on the comments below. Coming in cinemas on March 2013 to be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures

Resident Evil: Damnation Gets First Full Trailer

$

First of all this is not a sequel to that Mila Jovovich franchise that is having an international release. Resident Evil: Damnation is a sequel to the full cgi Resident Evil animation Resident Evil: Degeneration released 4 years ago.  It actually received mixed reviews but many definitely thinks it is far much better than the Hollywood live action.  If you are not convinced, watch the trailer below.

For now there are no official press release about the plot of the film but it looks like hell breaks loose on a particular European country which is I don't really have the time to find out where. Just like Degeneration, Damnation looks sick and I mean that in a good way. Not really sure if that is Chris Redfield but for now Leon and Ada is the only officially confirmed characters.

By the way, the film will be once again a direct to video release outside Japan while Japanese fans will be enjoying it when it premieres on cinemas on October 27, 2012 in 3D.

If only the live action is this good. The only reason I'm watching those films is Mila. Why don't they just reboot it and scrap the Alice story and follow the game's storyline. I don't really mind if they still get Mila and let her play Jill Valentine herself. She is a good action babe so I still want her on the franchise just in case they want to redo it.

UPDATED: New Armor from Iron Man 3 Revealed in SDCC

This just got in through ComicbookMovie.com. Marvel Studios and Walt Disney revealed Tony Stark's next armor for the Iron man 3 film. See the armor after the jump.

Update!!!  Here are some new shots taken with a better camera revealing more crisp details on the armor.  Will look for more photos online if I can.

For now there is still no details if this is indeed the Extremis armor. I will be updating this post as soon as I get more details. But for now all I can say is, I don't like this new design. But I don't hate it. Maybe I just need to get use to it.

Coming in cinemas on May 2013, Iron Man 3 is from Marvel Studio to be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.

Update 1: new photos added.
Update 2: back photo from screenrant
Update 3: photos from Iron Man movie facebook page

Marvel Finalizes Phase 2 Titles + Concept Art for Guardians of the Galaxy

$

0

Earlier, Marvel finalizes their line-up for the Phase 2 of Marvel Cinematic Universe mainly leading to The Avengers 2.  Among the revealed title treatments are final copy for each movie and a first concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Nothing really new here except for the new color scheme.  Possibly something very significant on the plot.  Or maybe simply for good luck (feng shui) :)  but just in case you missed it, here's the new armor also revealed in SDCC.

"Dark World"?  A very interesting title.  It may sound very simple but it also can give riddles to what world or realm will be explored on this sequel.  Most people speculate that it is Hel.  But the use of the word "Dark" also gives the hint about Dark Elves of Svartalfheim.  So far there are no final word about the plot.

Winter Soldier = Bucky Barnes.  Nuff said.  But then again, I hope this is not an amalgamated version.  And please bring back Hayley Atwell and let her play Sharon Carter.

According to the reports, Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim versus the World) premiered a test footage for Ant-man in SDCC.  I'm currently waiting for somebody to upload even a bootleg copy of it online so I can share it to everyone.  I heard it is good.  Of course it is good.  Edgar Wright is a genius.  I can 't wait how will his style on film making can blend to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And here's the first concept artworkfor Guardians of the Galaxy featuring Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon and Gamora.

Not really a fan of this story but according to my research Adam Warlock is once a member of this group and maybe this is the connection between Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers' new villain Thanos.  So far I'm really getting excited.  With this announcements, Marvel Studios and Walt Disney already secured at least 2 films every year until we reach The Avengers 2.  I think, I will not get bored of waiting.  Not to mention there are still movies from other distributors like Wolverine, X-Men First Class Sequel and Fantastic Four reboot. This is definitely a Marvel fan's heaven.

A Legend Ends: The Dark Knight Rises

“Batman is the hero Gotham deserves...but not the one it needs right now.”

Those words, spoken by Commissioner Gordon at the end of 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” set in motion a fateful conspiracy that labeled Batman a murderer and Harvey Dent—who died, unbeknownst to the public, as the vengeful Two-Face—a crime-fighting crusader who paid the ultimate price. Predicated on that lie, Gotham City enacted tough new laws that put criminals behind bars or drove them beyond Gotham’s borders

Now, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures brings to the screen “The Dark Knight Rises,” the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

Christopher Nolan says, “Our story picks up eight years later, when it seems that Batman and Commissioner Gordon have succeeded—the Dark Knight is no longer needed in Gotham. In that regard, Bruce Wayne has won the battle, but he is traumatized by what happened and doesn’t know how to move on from being the figure of Batman. ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ very much deals with the consequences of his and other characters’ actions in the previous films.”

Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar® winner Christian Bale again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Also starring are Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake.

Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman reprises the role of Lucius Fox.

With “The Dark Knight Rises,” Nolan completes the story arc he commenced with 2005’s “Batman Begins.” He recalls, “We were all very excited to bring this tale full circle; that was our chief inspiration for returning to Gotham. We also felt a tremendous sense of responsibility to fulfill expectations based on the first two movies while giving the audience something they hadn’t seen before. It was a tricky balance.”

The filmmakers and cast were also intent on maintaining a balance between heart-pounding action and intimate emotion. Producer Emma Thomas affirms, “Right from the start, Chris set out to make each of these films something that could not be categorized into any one genre. ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ has all of the excitement and fun that a big summer movie ought to have. The action is huge, but the story and characters are equally, if not more, important, because it’s hard to care about all the bells and whistles if there isn’t something to engage you in an emotional way.”

Producer Charles Roven adds, “We all want to be wowed, but we also want to be invested. Regardless of the scope, Chris has never lost his focus on the story and relationships, which goes back through all of his movies.”

The director also raised the bar for “The Dark Knight Rises” in expanding on his use of IMAX cameras. Nearly half of the movie was shot with the large-format cameras, utilizing ultra resolution 15 perf/65-millimeter film. Nolan states, “We got great results with the IMAX cameras on the last film. I appreciate what it offers from the technical side, but I’m most interested in what it can give me as a storytelling tool. How can it help me pull the audience deeper into this world? IMAX provides the broadest possible canvas, creating the most immersive experience.”

“The Dark Knight Rises” will be presented on 70-millimeter film in 102 IMAX 15/70mm locations worldwide. “Having shot almost half the picture with large-format IMAX film cameras, it is very important to me that we show ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in the IMAX film format wherever possible,” Nolan shares. “Audiences everywhere should be assured that every presentation of the film will be of the highest standard—having benefited from the clarity and depth IMAX cameras offer. However, these 102 screens will showcase the original IMAX film photography in its optimum form, and I hope anyone who has an opportunity to experience the film in these theatres will seek it out.”

Nolan concludes, “When you look back on the Dark Knight films, you can see the world we’re living in reflected, but we don’t want to be specific about it. We just come at the stories from the point of view of what concerns us. What gives us fear? What gives us hope? What would require a hero of Batman’s stature to rise up in our world?”

Opening across the Philippines on July 19 in IMAX, 2D and regular theaters, “The Dark Knight Rises” is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Just got home from the Philippine IMAX advance screening of The Dark Knight Rises and look who I just met: the caped crusader himself, Batman!!!

What I can tell you about the movie for now is this is a great closing for Nolan's Batman saga.  He definitely delivered a finale you won't ever forget.  He definitely caught us off guard and we like him for that.  That's all I can say.  Don't tempt me to talk further because even the slightest hint will definitely giveaway the spoiler.  You will know when I finally publish my full review probably in the end of the week. Advice: don't read reviews if you want to experience the wow factor of The Dark Knight Rises.  Like I said, even with reviews who says they are spoiler free may giveaway a clue that will reveal the film's turning point.  Not necessarily intentional but they can without knowing it.  Now if you are so eager to know what I'm talking about,  then watch it later when it finally opens on cinemas nationwide distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Another must watch clip from The Bourne Legacy.  I'm very sure people would love to see.  On this one and a half minute clip features Jeremy Renner (Aaron Cross) and Rachel Weisz (Marta) running from Manila police who appears to be looking for them. Not sure if they have connections with the villains but one thing is for sure, they are not stopping until they actually get them.   Watch the clip after the jump.

I hope this is just a fraction of the movie's Manila scene.  I getting more excited about it.  I'm happy for those actor who got the chance to be exposed on this Hollywood film, specially that actress I only know from her roles that are usually yayas in movies and teleseryes.

it is a shame that I don't know her name.  Please hit the comments if anyone knows :)

So far all of them are doing a good job and not just acting like how extras do on our local productions. Kudos.

Opening in cinemas on August 8, 2012. The Bourne Legacy is from Universal Pictures, to be distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment.

Man of Steel Teaser Trailer Comes Online: Superman on the Run?

Warner Bros. released the very first teaser trailer for Chris Nolan produced Superman adaptation titled Man of Steel.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

“Man of Steel” stars Henry Cavill as Superman and is directed by Zack Snyder. The film also stars three-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar® nominee Diane Lane and Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner.

It looks like it is different from the one shown in SDCC. But that is fine. After seeing Nolan's final take on The Dark Knight Legend, we may now speculate to how will Man of Steel will look and feel like. Judging this teaser, it looks like Clark is on the run possibly because people know what is his real identity is. From the musical score and tone, I'm already expecting this is a very emotional and dramatic film. But since it is directed by Zack Snyder, I still expect that this movie will go beyond what The Dark Knight Rises and make Superman as heroic as possible.  But of course it still falls to who will write it so I hope Goyer and Nolan will give us a new flavor of comic book adapted film.

Scheduled on a US release of June 14, 2013, Man of Steel is to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company

Marvel Avengers Alliance Adds More Character and Costumes

$
0
0

This is really not new news.  Marvel Avengers Alliance have been adding new characters (Black Panther, Scarlet Witch et al.) on their roster and some new costume upgrades.  But this set of new characters and costumes are just too cool not to share.  And they are coming very very soon.  I'll start with the set that I'm excited to acquire.

Based on the latest Marvel Avent: Avengers versus X-Men, some of the main X-Men members are transformed by the Phoenix force in to Phoenix powered versions of themselves.  They are suppose to be five for they are called Phoenix Five.  Among the ranks joining Cyclops, Illyana and Colossus is Namor which is still not available in MAA and Emma Frost aka the White Queen.  But good thing White Queen is now entering MAA.

But I guess we will still need to wait for further updates for her Phoenix Five suit for she will be appearing now on her base costume.

The Future Foundation costumes for Thing, Mr. Fantastic, Spider-man and Invisible Woman.  Not really reading this comic book but what I know is this is the relaunch team after Johnny Storm aka Human Torch died (which is apparently now alive according to some friends, Oh Marvel).  Spider-man replaces Johnny for the time being.  I really dig this new outfits.  Maybe I'm just too tired of the usual color scheme of the Fantastic Four suits that it becomes so boring.

Iron Fist Gold-White costume = kick ass!!! Nuff said.

Jim Lee designs returns!  Cyclops' iconic costume returns as a costume upgrade while Rogue is added on the roster .  Sweet!!!

And if there is Rogue, there will be the ragin' cajun himself, Gambit.  Fans have been waiting for this character ever since MAA's first release and I'm sure everybody will be excited to recruit this character on their roster.

And below are some more characters and costume that will be added on the game.  They are not exactly lesser characters but it just that they are the characters that don't get my interest as of the moment.  But I'm sure I know somebody out there that will like this set.

 Valkyrie and Tigra

 Quicksilver and Havok

Beast

New costumes for Dr. Strange and Daredevil

Looks like Marvel Avengers Alliance is getting stronger and stronger as the time goes by.  I wonder how long this facebook app will last online.  With some game apps closing after at least a year, can MAA maintain its momentum and popularity?  I guess as long as their are comic books and fans who likes spending more time online, Marvel Avengers Alliance will never get old.  Let's cross our fingers on that.

The Bourne Legacy Director Tony Gilroy and Staff Talks about Manila

$

During preproduction, of The Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy toured Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia, and Manila in the Philippines. Ultimately, Manila’s history as a shooting location won over the team. Major Hollywood features, such as Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July and Brokedown Palace, were shot in the Philippines in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. “They had a 25-, 30-year run of making movies there,” says Gilroy, “and they have this huge infrastructure that was built up from all the films made about Vietnam.”

The filmmaker called upon LOPE V. JUBAN, JR., president of Philippine Film Studios, who has worked on most of the films that have come to the Philippines over the past few decades, to give them a tour of Manila. Not only could Juban—who came on as a line producer—offer locations that Gilroy was looking for, but his contacts with government entities would also be vital for a shoot that involved major stunts on city streets. “Juban said, ‘We can talk to the president about that,’ or ‘We can talk to the minister of transportation and the police department about that.’ They’re all people that he knew,” Crowley explains. “I couldn’t have gotten that in Jakarta or in Ho Chi Minh City.”

In fact, The Bourne Legacy would be the first Hollywood film in which Manila plays Manila. “The Philippines has played almost any country—Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Panama,” says Juban. “It is only now that we are filming Manila as Manila, which is great for us.”

It was important to the locals to show off the progress the country had made and their big new areas of development. The Philippines also offered the advantage of a mainly English-speaking local crew. English, the legacy of the American presence for 50 years before World War II, is widely spoken in the country.

Filming in Manila began in the San Andres neighborhood, its ramshackle houses and dark alleyways typical of the city’s lower- and middle-class areas. The San Andres neighborhood has grown organically over the years as locals have kept constructing additions to existing buildings. The casual visitor will find many a residential area that resembles a rabbit-warren maze of alleyways that have been cobbled together.

With its tangled web of utility lines and drying laundry overhead, and pleasant cooking smells merging with other odors of the city, the labyrinthine San Andres neighborhood is where Aaron and Marta find a place to hide from their pursuers: this time, the Philippine authorities.

San Andres was also the setting for a stunt in which Aaron played by actor Jeremy Renner to save (Rachel Weiz) Marta from capture after she is cornered by the police, makes a daring slide three stories down a narrow opening between two buildings. Because of very specific requirements, this set, a narrow three-story structure that the filmmakers called “the chasm,” had to be built by Thompson and his team.

The production’s metro Manila locales also included the Ninoy Aquino International Airport; the historic Intramuros district, known for its Spanish colonial architecture; the Manila Yacht Club; the Marikina covered market; and the Metropoint MRT train station in Pasay City. The crew also traveled approximately an hour by plane from Manila to El Nido, located on the stunning Philippine island of Palawan, for scenes that take place amidst the magnificent islands of the South China Sea. The dramatic islands, with their limestone cliffs that emerge directly from the water, are more often associated with the landscapes of Malaysia and Thailand.

For several days the crew also filmed part of a chase at Navotas Fish Port, known as the fishing capital of the Philippines, situated north of the city on Manila Bay. In the evenings, the location is a working fish market—1,000 feet long and 200 feet wide—that sells more than 100,000 fish every night. Every morning during the shoot, the crew had to scrub, steam and dry the market. Thompson and his team removed hanging tarps, added skylights and supporting posts, and scrubbed the floor to lessen the overpowering fish smell. This also served a practical purpose: to make the location safe for the complex stunt work that was to be performed there.

No Bourne film would be complete without its fair share of action. Still, emphasizes producer Frank Marshall: “Our rules that we have been very consistent with through all the movies is that we don’t have action for action’s sake. We don’t have a formula where every 10 minutes there has to be a fight scene or an action scene. The action has to be driven by the story. That’s what makes this series unique: These characters get into situations that lead to an action scene or a chase scene, but it all has a story point.”

Unit director Dan Bradley traveled to Manila months before shooting began in order to tailor the action sequences to the locations. “When we looked at the locations, he was with us, and then he said, ‘I’m going to stay behind for a week,’” producer Patrick Crowley recalls. “We waited for Dan to just sit and meditate and come up with great ideas. He’s come up with some things that have never been done before.”

Bradley’s biggest task was to choreograph a motorcycle chase that takes place on the crowded streets of Manila, much of it filmed with Renner in the rider’s seat. “When you’re doing something in which there’s somebody on a motorcycle and they’re not wearing a helmet, you have to have the principal actor do that,” says Crowley. “So we had Jeremy very much involved, and Rachel as well.”

Luckily for the production, Renner is an avid motorcyclist. “When I first met Jeremy, we were going to have some practice sessions, and he showed up on one of the fastest motorcycles in the world, which was one of 10 that he owned,” remembers Crowley. “We felt comfortable that we didn’t have to train him. He has the bones of an action hero. When I see him, I see that silent strength of Steve McQueen. When he gets on a motorcycle, then he becomes even more like him.”

Renner also put Weisz at ease as they worked with Bradley. “Being on the back of a bike with Jeremy, I felt completely safe,” she says. “He was doing wheelies, skids and slides—those kind of stunts that he’s very good at.”

The filmmakers were also impressed when Weisz displayed a previously unseen side: that of an action star. “She’s a great actress and has shown all this incredible talent playing characters who are typically not action characters,” says Crowley. But Weisz insisted on as much rehearsal on the motorcycle as possible and performed much of the stunt work herself. Laughs the producer: “Your heart still goes into your throat when you see her going 45, 50 miles an hour on the motorcycle with Jeremy.”

Prior to filming in Manila, Bradley’s team spent several weeks rehearsing the motorcycle stunts, while special equipment was brought in, including Bradley’s own “Go Mobile,” a custom-made vehicle upon which several cameras may be mounted. Bradley also recruited several expert motorcyclists, including professional stunt driver JEAN-PIERRE GOY, arguably one of the best in the world, to double on the most dangerous stunts. All were pleased to have an actual Batman on board for the production, as Goy was the only one able to drive the two-wheeled street machine called the Bat-Pod for scenes in The Dark Knight. Indeed, he returned to his key role for this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Bradley’s team also retrofitted several jeepneys, a minibus that is the most common form of transportation in the Philippines. “The jeepneys were our heritage from World War II,” Juban explains. “When jeeps were left behind by the Americans, the Filipinos made the body longer. From that time on, it has ended up our main public utility vehicle. That’s iconic Manila.”

Each painted in a bright, unique style to entice passengers to hop aboard, jeepneys are ubiquitous throughout the country, numbering around 100,000 in Manila alone. The long and narrow vehicle is a cheap and easy form of transportation, ideally shaped for navigating narrow roads that full-size buses cannot. Open windows provide its only form of air conditioning, and its passenger seating consists of two padded benches facing each other in the back, each seating six to 10 people. When the seats are full, additional passengers ride outside, hanging onto the back as best they can.

Jeepneys are featured in a key chase sequence with Renner, Weisz and Changchien that was filmed on one of Manila’s major roadways, Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard, the main route to the presidential palace. Approximately 90 cars and more than 300 extras were used for the sequence, which shot on a mile and a half stretch of Magsaysay Blvd. through three major intersections over several weekends. Helping manage the shoot were local authorities including the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Manila Traffic Bureau and the Presidential Security Group.

“Just on the MMDA, there were about 120 guys working with us—not just in the area, but in the peripheral surroundings to control and help ease the traffic,” Juban recounts. “The Manila police have a contingent of about 50, and the Presidential Security Group has about 20, and then there is the local barangay [district] police.”

A densely populated city of more than 11 million people, Manila was not the easiest place to shoot. “Manila’s a tough city to work in: There are traffic jams, and it’s hard to move around,” ends Crowley. “But the people are so gracious and excited about films. They know more about the Bourne movies than I know about the Bourne movies.”

Opening in cinemas on August 8, 2012. The Bourne Legacy is from Universal Pictures, to be distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment.

At last Brave is finally hitting the local cinemas here in the Philippines. It is now our turn to witness this history in the making where Pixar introduces its very first female lead protagonist and a possible addition to the ranks of Disney Princesses which is if ever she is given the honor, she will be the first from Pixar.

But before we see this movie, i guess we need to have character roll call. Don't worry there is nothing spoilerish here. Just think this as a guide so that you can concentrate on the events that will unfold in the film. So ladies and gentlemen, here are the characters from Disney Pixar's brave.

MERIDA (Voice of Kelly Macdonald).
Passionate and fiery, Merida is a headstrong teenager of royal upbringing who is struggling to take control of her own destiny. She feels most at home in the outdoors honing her impressive athletic skills as an archer and swordfighter, and racing across the magnificent Highland countryside with her faithful horse, Angus. With a spirit as vibrant as her untamed hair, Merida also has a softness of heart, especially when it comes to her wee triplet brothers.

QUEEN ELINOR (Voice of Emma Thompson).
A vision of grace, wisdom and strength of character, Queen Elinor is fiercely dedicated to the well being of her family and kingdom. As the measured, diplomatic counterpoint to her more impulsive husband, King Fergus, Elinor carries the weight of the kingdom on her shoulders.
KING FERGUS (Voice of Billy Connolly).
Protector of his kingdom and family, King Fergus is a heroic warrior with a majestic bear cape, broad sword and a knobby peg leg – the result of his much-regaled skirmish with the demon bear Mor’du.

THE TRIPLETS.
Identical triplets Harris, Hubert and Hamish are adorable, redheaded, and always ready to stir up a bit of mischief, especially if sweets are at stake.

ANGUS.
Black as night with ivory muzzle and fetlocks, Angus is Merida’s powerful Clydesdale and her most trusted confidant.

THE LORDS.
The three lords of the kingdom – Dingwall, Macintosh and MacGuffin – are the unruly, overzealous leaders of their respective clans. Though once warring factions, they have been united under the sword of King Fergus and held together by the diplomacy and political savvy of Queen Elinor.

LORD MACGUFFIN (Voice of Kevin McKidd).
Strapping Lord MacGuffin is a man of few words, though his deep voice resounds across the land demanding respect.
YOUNG MACGUFFIN (Also voiced by Kevin McKidd).
Speaking an uncommon Scottish dialect that is incomprehensible to most, Young MacGuffin is a shy lad of large proportions.

LORD DINGWALL (Voice of Robbie Coltrane).
Grumpy and quick-tempered, the scrappy Lord Dingwall doesn’t let being height-challenged get in the way of solving his problems with fisticuffs.
WEE DINGWALL.
Gangly, guileless and often lost in his own head, Wee Dingwall is the awkward son of Lord Dingwall.

LORD MACINTOSH (Voice of Craig Ferguson).
The wiry, indignant and off-kilter leader of his clan, Lord Macintosh is always a heartbeat away from hysterics.
YOUNG MACINTOSH.
Young Macintosh knows he has it all – athletic physique, undeniable charm and long flowing locks that leave the lasses swooning in his wake.

Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International, “Brave” takes aim at Philippine theaters on August 01, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Last Sunday, 9 Works Theatrical posted a teaser image in their facebook page which is suppose to be a hint to the show they are staging next year.  At first I'm really confused about what it is.  I got the tune but I don't know what musical it is.  But of course thanks to Internet I figured it out.  Here's the teaser.

For now there is no specific date mentioned but my best guess is they will stage it in February in time for Valentines season.  Either way, I'm excited because I haven't seen this show before so here's another new for me.

Looking Back on Forgotten Memories: 13 the Musical

Do you still remember everything about your past experience?  Of course we don't really forget faces, important experiences and monumental events that occurred in our lives.  But some of us tend to forget details specially if those experiences are not so good. And I'm one of those people.  I can hardly remember my teen years.  Maybe because those are the times that people actually bullied me and considered to be on the bottom of the food chain so they speak.  But years past I regret forgetting those memories because going with my life without them is an empty journey.  Thank God, 13 the Musical came to remind me.

13: The Musical brings back all the wonderful (and horrific) memories of adolescence through a story that will strike a chord with anyone aged 13 and up. The scenes are familiar – featuring first kisses, blackmail, bullying, courtship, and many other moments of being 13 years old – but shown under a sweeter, more poignant, and more mature light than your average coming-of-age teenage story. Presented by Ateneo Blue Repertory, with a young cast who still remembers how the world looked in the eyes of a 13 year old, 13: The Musical is a nostalgic musical journey down the road of growing up.

It may sound like another High School Musical or Glee but the big difference is 13 the Musical's narrative focuses on the character's struggle on their everyday life. They are not singers, actors or glee club members. They are just like you, a regular Jock, Geek, or even that horrible bitch or jerk that you hate. With characters presented in their most genuine characterization, expect that you will definitely see yourself on these roles and let you reflect on your own past experiences as a teenager.

Of course it also helps that Ateneo Blue Rep's talents are doing a good job on portraying their respective roles. They always amaze me. RJ Santillan (Evan) is a natural and he plays his role with great precision and with full confidence.  Bernice Reyes (Patrice) is an absolute charmer.  Though I believe her character lacks character development, she still get's my attention not just because she is beautiful but she did take her role seriously and she connected to me specially on that final song.

Another actor that caught my attention is somebody called Eddie.  I'm very sure that you will definitely notice this actor because of the cool dreadlocks.  But other than that, this actor exhibits enthusiasm and energy ever since the minute this actor steps on the stage.  You may think that hey, that is not so special.  Well wait till you find out that this Eddie is not your average actor. Eddie is actually a she.  I'm so impressed because it is rare to find cross dressing female that plays male characters that can actually play it without giving any hint that they are female actors.  In my experience, even some veteran actors can't pull it perfectly.  Nikki Surtida nails the part flawlessly and that makes her my absolute favorite in the cast.

I've already said this before and I will say it again, Ateneo Blue Rep is definitely one of the best maker of great talents in local theater scene.  Thanks Ateneo Blue Rep for making me realize that experiences are still worth remembering. No matter how bad they are. Good job, Direk Toff de Venecia. I wish you will continue directing more productions in the future.

The show resumes tomorrow August 1 until August 11 at the Fine Arts Theater, 3/F Gonzaga Hall, Ateneo de Manila University. Please contact Aina Pacificador at 09175002462 for ticket inquiries.
