New Trailer for Taken 2 Released

20th Century FOX just released a new trailer for the Taken 2 that features more footage. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Feature release:

2008's hit action-thriller “Taken” took the multi-faceted actor Liam Neeson’s career in a new milieu as a relatable action hero. The role of Bryan Mills, the embittered former CIA man forcing his way into a dark sex cartel to save his kidnapped daughter, became iconic, resonating with audiences all over the globe.

Back for more carnage, Neeson reprises the role of Bryan Mills in “TAKEN 2” shot in Istanbul which also stars Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace. “Taken 2” reunites Neeson with his co-stars Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace, who play Bryan's estranged wife and his precious daughter. “Bryan's a total superhero,” says Janssen, weighing in on what made audiences connect with the first film. “TAKEN really came at a time when people needed that in their lives, because it's about family and protecting your family. He's a very American hero.”

In this latest action-packed reel set against the backdrop of Istanbul, Mills is being followed by the Albanian goons determined to exact revenge on him and his family. In the lead to exact revenge on Mills is Murad (Rade Sherbedgia) who is the father of the kidnapper that Mills killed in the first movie. With Mills and his wife taken, Kim (Maggie Grace) is left to save her parents.

Without giving away too much of the movie- Neeson teases that in the movie, “I’m able to, in a very covert way, instruct her to find out where I am being held because a sack’s been put over my head and I’m in the middle of a dungeon. It’s highly impossible yet equally possible,” says Neeson from an interview with Empire magazine.

Trailer did show more footage and a confirmation about Neeson's character being abducted together with Janssen's. And we also already know that he will definitely make a good escape. But one thing still tickles my curiosity is if Maggie Grace's character will do a lot of action on this installment. The trailer just showed a single scene where she is being chased and jumping roofs. That is actually the same footage from the first trailer. That is not enough for me. I want to see if she will indeed kick some terrorists ass. Or maybe they are just saving it until the release of the film. I hope it is worth the wait.

“Taken 2” opens nationwide in the Phils. on October 4 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

From New York to Manila: Meet the Cast of Potted Potter Manila

$

Recently I already shared about this interesting show called Potted Potter which is an unauthorized musical comedy summarizing all the Harry Potter Books in just 1 show.  Reports says that the show is currently a big hit and all shows are sold out.  Well that is actually what I'm expecting considering the number of Harry potter fans out there.  But enough about the show because I know you already know that.  This time, I will be introducing to everyone two of the most amazing international performers  who will be performing on this exciting extravaganza.  So without further ado, here are Jesse Briton and Gary Trainor.

Jesse Briton is an actor, writer, and a director. He has been trained under East 15 Acting School in UK in which he earned a nomination as Best Actor in Spotlight Prize 2012 even just during his training. His experiences in acting include his participation in the stage adaptation of Mr Benn and the one-man show, Bassonists Against the Cuts. As a writer, he had great success for Bound, a sea-bleached tragedy of maritime decline told with traditional sea shanties, which gathered numerous awards in Edinburgh Fringe and earned him a nomination as the Evening Standard Most Promising Playwright. As a director, he handled Bound and Enduring Song for Bear Trap Theater Company in which he is the company’s artistic director.

Joining Jesse is Gary Trainor, an Irish actor whom had trainings at The Italia Conti Academy where he gained a first class BA (Hons) Degree in acting. Part of his acting experience is in the critically acclaimed UK tour of Frankenstein as the lead actor, Shelly. He was also seen in Buddy, The Buddy Holly Story, The Shawshank Redemption, Stones in His Pockets, Into The Woods, and Jago. To top it off, he was recently chosen to take part in The Old Vic New Voices, which is a 24-hour play project.

Wow.  With this credentials and list of works, it is no doubt that Jesse and Gary will be giving Manial audience one hell of a show.  With actors having this caliber, I can't imagine how epic and fun this play will become.  I'm really more excited now to see it. Opening curtains in Manila on August 28 to September 2, with limited 10 shows at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza Makati City.

POTTED POTTER in Manila is produced by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, Potted Productions and Concertus Manila.  Book your tickets now at Ticketworld 891-9999 or log on to www.ticketworld.com.ph.

The Hobbit is now Officially a Trilogy + New Banner Spread

Warner Bros. officially announced yesterday that The Hobbit will be translated into 3 movies in contrast of the first plan of only 2 installments. Peter Jackson get a green light from the studio's executive not only because they just want to earn more but also to hear the fans cry for more Lord of the rings goodness. Read the official Press release below:

BURBANK, CA, JULY 30, 2012 — Peter Jackson will make a third film in his upcoming adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, it was jointly announced today by Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Operating Officer, New Line Cinema, Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officers, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Jackson, the Academy Award®-winning filmmaker behind the blockbuster “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, recently wrapped principal photography on what he originally planned to be a two-film adaptation of The Hobbit, which is set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings.

Jackson stated, “Upon recently viewing a cut of the first film, and a chunk of the second, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and I were very pleased with the way the story was coming together. We recognized that the richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, gave rise to a simple question: do we tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as filmmakers and fans was an unreserved ‘yes.’ We know the strength of our cast and of the characters they have brought to life. We know creatively how compelling and engaging the story can be and—lastly, and most importantly—we know how much of the tale of Bilbo Baggins, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur would remain untold if we did not fully realize this complex and wonderful adventure. I’m delighted that New Line, MGM and Warner Bros. are equally enthusiastic about bringing fans this expansive tale across three films.”

Emmerich stated, “We completely support Peter and his vision for bringing this grand adventure to the screen over the course of three films. Peter, Fran and Philippa’s reverence for the material and understanding of these characters ensure an exciting and expanded journey that is bound to please fans around the world.”
“With the abundance of rich material, we fully endorse the decision to further develop what Peter, Fran and Philippa have already begun. We are confident that, with the great care the filmmakers have taken to faithfully bring this journey to the screen, the film will be welcomed by the legions of fans across the globe,” said Barber and Birnbaum.

Robinov added, “Peter, Fran and Philippa have lived in this world and understand more than anyone its tremendous breadth and scope, and the relationships that bind it together. We strongly support their vision to bring this great work fully to life.”

The first film in the trilogy, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” will be released December 14, 2012, with the second film releasing on December 13, 2013, and the third film slated for summer 2014. All three films will be released in 3D and 2D in select theatres and IMAX.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes three films based on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The trilogy of films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. Returning cast members from “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy also include Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, and Andy Serkis as “Gollum.” The international ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Billy Connolly, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.

The screenplay for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro. Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.
Under Jackson’s direction, all three movies are being shot in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Additional filming, as with principal photography, is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and its successive installments are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros. Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing, being handled by MGM.

And here's a new full spread first released in Entertainment Weekly. Now it is released for the public.

The Bourne Legacy Movie Review

$

Just saw Bourne Legacy last night and because I'm late, I won't be commenting about the plot.  I'll probably save that when I saw it again. So basically, I just seat there and try to comprehend what the movie is all about and wait for the main reason why I'm there: to see the scenes shot in Manila.

For somebody like me who haven't seen the first 3 movies top-billed by Matt Damon, I can't really say how fateful the movie is at least in terms of texture and style. Getting a different director don't necessarily mean that it will be different.  I understand the main idea of the story but what I really need to do is watch the first Trilogy.  Yes, to fully appreciate this film, you need to watch the previous movies because there are a lot of characters, terminologies and important plot points that an audience needs to know.  The movie tried to give recaps on some past characters specially Jason Bourne but of course they don't have the luxury of time and they are limited by short verbal explanations for those details.  And to somebody who didn't saw the first 3 movies, it is hard to catch-up.

The Manila scenes is basically all of those clips released online (some of them are published here).  But there are also scenes not shown on those clips.  It is longer than I expected.  It is not explosive but should I say more on the exciting and riveting side.  On this movie, I realize that it is possible to have a massive chase scene in Manila.  I'll have to give the Manila crew thumbs up for a job very well done.

Did Jeremy Renner live up to the expectations.  Personally I can say yes.  I think ever since Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, I already saw Renner's big potential on being a lead and he proves that he can actually deliver and carry a franchise on his back (figuratively and literally).  Now did he surpasses Matt Damon's performance in the first 3 movie?  That I can't answer... for now.

Rachel Weisz as always is brilliant female lead.  She is definitely one of those actress that are not only just your common damsel in distress but she is one hell of a lady who can deliver excellent acting performances. Ok I can be very biased when it comes to her but hell seriously?  Who would not fall in love on such beauty and talent?  I have been in love with this woman ever since The Mummy (and yes including that so called mediocre Constantine) and never in a single moment of my life that I stopped adoring this absolutely incredible performer.

L-R: John Arcilla (Joseph the Bodyguard), Madeleine  Nicolas (Landlady), Lou Veloso (The Fisherman), Anne Garcia ("TV Mom") and Ruby Ruiz (Pharmacist)

I also want to give a big shout out to Mr. John Arcilla, Ms. Madeleine Nicolas, Lou Veloso, Anne Garcia and Ruby Ruiz who plays some of the crucial roles on the film.  Though not really named (except Arcilla's who is given the name Joseph), the 5 of them together with all the other actors gave performance that we can be proud of.  After all, in Hollywood there is no big or small roles.

In a nut shell, The Bourne Legacy production wise is promising and you will definitely enjoy seeing all those Manila scene. Come on,  it is very rare that Manila plays Manila on an international film.  Might as well enjoy it.  I will definitely watch it again but hopefully after I saw the first Bourne Trilogy.  I may publish a follow-up review after watching all of them.

Opening in cinemas on August 8, 2012. The Bourne Legacy is from Universal Pictures, to be distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment.

Commemorating the Legends: I do Bidoo Bidoo, Heto nAPO Sila

Ever since the day I saw Moulin Rouge!, Across the Universe and Mamma Mia!, I wonder will there ever be a local musical that will feature legendary songs written by OPM legends and transformed them to a musical narrative.  That was 2008.  Now that wish came true this year when Unitel together with Studio 5, presents musical film based on a group that we all love.  Here comes I do Bidoo Bidoo: Heto nAPO sila: An Apo Hiking Society Musical.

Conceived by Unitel Productions' Tony Gloria who dreams to have a film based on the songs of APO Hiking Soceity. He wants to revive the musical era of the industry but instead of using foreign themes, why not use our own.  And the idea is born. “I believe that the Filipino moviegoer is ripe for this kind of musical extravaganza especially when the music is something close to their hearts like the songs of APO.” Mr. Gloria, whose vision is shared, nurtured and upheld by Unitel’s new President Ms. Madonna Tarrayo, added, “I wanted to give back something we can be proud of - for the Filipino, by the Filipino.”

Direk ChrisMartinez (right) and Producer Tony Gloria (left),
definitely my favorite producer since Crying Ladies :P
The movie will be directed by Chris Martinez, the genius behind "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank" and "Kimmy Dora Saga". Chris Martinez sky-rocketed to fame after creating such entertaining pieces. Now he will embark on his first full length Musical back to his home studio, Unitel.

The Powerhouse Leads.  The force is indeed strong.

Oh you think that is already great? Wait till you find out who are the cast. The movie will be lead by OPM legends like Ogie Alcasid (Pol Polotan), Zsa zsa Padilla (Elaine Fuentebella) and Gary Valenciano (Nick Fuentebella). Imagine this 3 big OPM and Movie stars uniting on a musical film singing the APO's greatest hits. It is a cast made in heaven. And wait there is more. Joining them is comedy super star that we all love. She is none other than Ms. Eugene Domingo, playing Ogie Alcasid's wife, Rosie Polotan.

Sam Concepcion and Tippy Dos Santos
Don't be fooled by this 2 teenagers because they are one hell of a performer.
You should have seen them on stage.

The movie also features 2 of the fastest rising stars both on Movies, TV and Theater. The Movie revolves around Tippy Dos Santos (Tracy Fuentebella) when she finds herself pregnant of Sam Concepcion's (Rock Polotan) child. With this complication, their family is entangled on a series of unfortunate events, sprinkled with APO's memorable tracks.

Theater veteran and Member of the Country's Premiere Vocal Group The Company, Sweet Plantado-Tiongson joins the cast together with teen star Neil Coleta and Avenue Q Star, Frenchie Dy.

The supporting cast is also not a joke. They are composed by the best talents and mostly theater musical actors. I guess Direk Chris prefers talent than fame so he see to it that all of his cast can really sing and of course act. The support cast includes Sweet Plantado (You're a Good Man Charlie Brown), Frenchie Dy (Avenue Q), Neil Coleta (Aryana), Jaime Fabregas (Here Comes the Bride), Kiray Celis (Kimmy Dora 2) and Gerald Pesigan (E-Boy).

After Joel Lamangan's Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah and Chito Ronio's Emir, I do BiDoo BiDoo is defintely another step for the local musical film scene. This movie is definitely a must watch. If the reasons I mentioned above is not enough, I don't know what will convince you.

Finally opening in August 29, 2012, I do BiDoo BiDoo: Heto nAPO Sila is from Unitel with partnership with Studio 5. Let's all celebrate OPM pride and see you all at the movies.

The Bourne Legacy: Arcilla Defends Gilroy on "Ugly Manila" Comment

Despite the success in both box office and critical reception, The Bourne Legacy is now receiving a lot of backlash from some netizens because of how Manila is portrayed in the film The Bourne Legacy. The intense arguments online becomes more heated when an specific statement from Gilroy went public through PEP.ph. Here is the statement:

“We went to Manila and it felt so Bourne-ish. It's just so colorful and ugly and griddy, raw and stinky and crowded.

-Gilroy through pep.ph

Because of this, John Arcilla a local actor who is also part of the cast comes to the rescue with a very brief statement on his Facebook account. Here is his statement:

photo L-R: Rachel Weisz, John Arcilla, Jeremy Renner and Tony Gilroy
photo grabbed from John Arcilla's Facebook account

MARAMI RAW NAIINIS SA BOURNE LEGACY DAHIL PANGIT ANG MGA PINAKITANG LUGAR SA MANILA. Well, i found the aerial and top views of night time Manila amazing and picturesque shots of Manila. Am also wondering why we are so afraid of the reality that we still have a poor country (whether we like it or not) and there is this big part in Manila that really belongs to the depressed area. Remember that even New York City has its Ghetto. I think that this should also serve as a wake up call for our public servants and to all of us, to solve or do something about this reality if we are so uneasy about it, rather than trying to hide something that is so real. The ending shot of El Nido Palawan is so vindicating that inspite of all the odds they FOUND A PARADISE IN THE PHILIPPINES...if we want to make it relevant AFTER SEEING THE BEAUTIFUL PALAWAN we should ask: why is it that there are slums in this Paradise-like country or why is it that there are a lot of poor people in this supposedly rich country? that should be our next question NOT why are we showing these areas in our country...tama si Ed Finlan if i may quote HIM: "The fact is the Philippines had a Billion Pesos worth of publicity which those who are in the POSITION could never do!" and considering the Vast Natural resources that our country has, DAPAT AY WALANG GANITO KADAMING MAHIRAP NA TAO SA ATING BAYAN.

I for one believe that Gilroy's statement is not meant to insult our country. The ugly face of Manila is what makes this locations beautiful in artistic point of view. We've been seeing all of this on our own films specially on indie films. But why on earth we are reacting on The Bourne Legacy alone.

I just wish that all my fellow Filipinos change their perspective. Don't look at this film as an attack but rather an opportunity to feature Manila as a viable location for film not only locally but of course internationally. And we wish that The Bourne Legacy is not the last time we will see our country on a Blockbuster offering.

Still showing on all cinemas nationwide from Universal Pictures, to be distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment.

Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles Releases Full Trailer

Hey guys.  Reality Entertainment just released the first full trailer for Erik Matti's Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles.  If you are wowed by the teaser trailer, this time you will see a sneak peek of what you will expect from this groundbreaking project.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Now that is what you call an Aswang movie raised to the next level.  Looks like we will be given the privilege of seeing a classic concept tailored for the new generation.  So far, the CGI on this trailer is flawless and incredible.  I also want to commend the production design for creating such beautiful scenery with aid of practical props and computer generated objects.  This film is definitely pushing the boundaries just to make a film that will create an innovation to our local film industry.

The cast is brilliant. Well in my opinion most of them don't really have good chemistry but surprisingly the variety of talent makes the ensemble more dynamic and interesting.  The combination of Regal's Shake Rattle and Roll Alumnus like Joey Marquez and Janice De Belen works well with the new generation stars such as Lovi and Dingdong. I'm also glad to see some action movie veterans such as Roi Vinzon, Mike Gayoso, Roldan Aquino and more.

I know that this trailer is not enough to give my final verdict and I will be reserving my final judgement when I finally see the final product.  But this trailer is enough to make me more interested and excited to see this when it comes out in October 17, 2012 in cinemas nationwide.  Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles is Directed by Erik Matti from Agosto Dos Productions, Reality Entertainment and GMA Films.

PETA Opens 45th Theater Season with Lino Brocka's "BONA"

$

This coming Friday, PETA is opening their 45th Theater season with a very special play that will serve as a retrospect to classic and legendary film masterpiece that captivates the heart of Filipino movie patrons since 1980.  As an opening, they are staging the live adaptation of the Lino Brocka classic, "Bona" top-billed by the Superstar Nora Aunor and Philip Salvador.

Edgar Allan Guzman as Gino Sanchez and Ms. Eugene Domingo as Bona
But of course this new version of Bona will be different to the original.  Just like what Direk Soxie Topacio said, they need to update it and tailor made it for the new generation.  So instead of a young school girl, Bona is now a call center agent to be played by the box office comedy star Eugene Domingo and Gardo becomes Gino, a talent search contestant played by Edgar Allan Guzman.

Other than the updated backdrop and story, long time fans of the original should not worry because the main idea of the original film is of course preserved and left intact.  It is still about a woman's blind obsession that pushes her limits as a fan and how she turns her back on almost everything that she have just for the man he worship.  Ms. Layeta Bucoy (Playwright) promised that this new version is even more intense compared to the original but clarifies that overthrowing the original is not the main goal. Their main objective is to create and offer something new to both new and veteran audiences while commemorating Direk Lino Brocka's undying Legacy.  One big noticeable change between the original and the new Bona is the obvious humorous treatment of the material.  But despite that they still managed to stay true to the emotional aspect of the characters by bringing intense social and psychological rollercoaster scenes that audience will surely enjoy.

L-R: Olive Nieto (Binky), BJ Forbes (Bingo) and Eugene Domingo as Bona
The rest of the cast will include a bunch of talented names from the local theater scene like Phil Noble, Joey Paras, Jef Henson-Dee, Raffy Tejada, Juliene Mendoza, She Maala, Olive Nieto, Dudz Teraña, Jason Barcial, BJ Forbes, Junevir Tabor, Gabs Santos and Anna Luna.

To be directed by Soxie Topacio and adapted by Layeta Bucoy with additional scenes by Phil Noble, Bona officially opens this coming friday, August 24, 2012 and will run until September 23., at the PETA Theater Center Quezon City.  Grab your tickets now through www.ticketworld.com.ph or www.petatheater.com.  For more information contact 725-6244, 0917-5765400, 0916-3090707 or email PETA at petatheater@gmail.com.

Don't miss the chance to witness this history in the making and see you at the theater ;)

Finally The Phantom of the Opera is opening in Manila tomorrow much to the delight of all the fans across the nation.  But before we see this fine masterpiece by the living legend Andrew Lloyd Webber, let us all take a quick glimpse on the actors that will play the characters that captured our hearts for years since 1986.

Jonathan Roxmouth as the Phantom
South African-born Jonathan has received numerous awards and nominations from South Africa’s premier theatre. For his outstanding performance as The Phantom for the show’s South African season, he was awarded Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical in the 2012 Fleur Du Cap Awards.

Jonathan also won the Fleur Du Cap Award, as well as the highly respected Naledi Award, for Best Performance in a Musical for the lead role of Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. He also received a Naledi Award Nomination for Best Performance in a Musical for the lead role of Danny Zuko in Grease, and nominations for both a Naledi Award and Fleur Du Cap Award for his performance in A Handful of Keys.

In addition to his credits as a leading musical theatre performer, Jonathan Roxmouth is an accomplished concert pianist, performing at concerts and corporate events in South Africa.

Producer Tim McFarlane, Managing Director of The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific, said “When I first saw Jonathan’s performance as The Phantom I recognized an exceptional talent, and his interpretation of this iconic role is exciting, fresh and immensely powerful. This kind of talent is just what we are looking for, and Jonathan will be performing the role of The Phantom for the full Asian tour of The Phantom of the Opera. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him perform the role elsewhere in the world in the future.

Claire Lyon as Christine Daaé
Classically trained, Claire graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne in Australia, with a Bachelor of Music Performance.

Most recently Claire has performed the role of Christine numerous times in the new and highly acclaimed Australian production or Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies, the sequel to THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

Prior to joining the cast of Love Never Dies, Claire was a renowned member of Australia’s national opera company, Opera Australia, performing in numerous classic operas such as The Merry Widow, Madame Butterly, Aida, La Traviata, Peter Grimes, Tosca and Carmen. She also performed the roles of Ida in Die Fledermaus and Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro, and performed in the world premiere of Opera Australia’s Bliss, which went on to enjoy success at The Edinburgh Festival.

As a soprano soloist, Claire has performed in oratorio works such as Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle and Bach’s B Minor Mass and Cantata Number 149 with the Victorian College of the Arts Orchestra.

Claire is the perfect Christine,” said Mr. McFarlane. “She has the most exquisite voice which imbues the role with just the right blend of vulnerability, passion and tragedy. She is a beautiful performer.”

And of course the whole show is nothing without the supporting cast who are equally talented like the leads. Here are actors the compose the supporting ensemble.

Anthony Downing as Raoul
A highly accomplished actor, singer, dancer, pianist and composer. Trained in South Africa and London, award-winning Anthony has performed in musicals, dance productions, film and TV, and performs with a 7-part acappella group.

James Borthwick as Monsieur Firmin
A seasoned actor with many of South Africa’s prestigious theatre, film and TV awards to his credit, the Naledi and Fleur Du Cap Awards for Best Performance in a Musical (2010) for his role as Peron in Evita.

Jason Ralph as Monsieur Andre
Following his first Fleur Du Cap nomination as Most Promising Student while at the University of Cape Town’s Drama Department, Jason has gone on to receive numerous nominations and awards from both the Fleur Du Cap and Naledi Awards during his long career. He won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Rocky Horror Show and toured to China, Taiwan and Jakarta in High School Musical. He makes regular appearances on TV and film in South Africa.

Andrea Creighton as Carlotta
New Zealand-born Andrea has sung principal roles in numerous classic operas for many international opera companies, including Opera National de Paris and New Zealand Opera. Her concert and recital work has taken her around the world, from engagements with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra to the Orchestre National de Paris to the UK’s Halle Orchestra. Andrea has won numerous awards and scholarships during her singing career.

Rebecca Spencer as Madam Giry
Her romance with THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA began when she was cast in the role of Carlotta in the German production in Hamburg. Rebecca has performed more than 50 principal roles in operas and musicals across the USA and Canada, and has appeared on television and in film. She has performed as a soloist for numerous American Symphony Orchestras, has performed solo concerts in New York, and has recorded two critically acclaimed albums.

Thabiso Mesemene as Piangi
Recently performed the role of Don Basilio in Opera Africa’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He has also performed as Nemorino in L’Eisir d’Amore, Ernesto in Don Pasquale and Beppein in Pagliaci, Thabiso is part of a successful group called the Gaabo-motho Tenors with whom he has performed internationally.

Cat Lane as Meg Giry
Cat has performed in numerous musicals in London’s West End and internationally, including Grease, Cats, Footloose, Beauty and the Beast and Saturday Night Fever. She has also performed in Spirit of the Dance on its US tour, and in pantomimes such as Cinderella.

Dondi Ong as Piangi
Last but not the least, we are proud to announce that there will be a Pinoy representative on the cast.  Alternating with Thabiso Mesemene as Piangi, is our very own Dondi Ong.  Filipino tenor Dondi has trained at the UP College of Music gaining a degree in Music, majoring in Voice. He graduated as Magna Cum Laude and the class valedictorian. He has played lead and prominent roles in various Filipino plays, zarzuelas and musicals and has travelled to the US, Europe and Japan to perform for foreign audiences. As a stage performer Dondi had played prominent roles in: Lucio San Pedro’s “Bayan Isang Paa na Lamang”, Boni Ilagan’s “Pagsambang Bayan”, Lucrecia Kasilag’s “Why Flowers Bloom in May”, Roldan/Asencio’s “Song of Joseph”, Floy Quintos’ “Isang Panaginip na Fili” and Puccini’s “La Boheme” among others.  He is very excited to comeback in Manila and once again perform in front of his fellow Filipinos.

This is just the main cast who are actually playing most of the notable characters from the show.  But the whole ensemble definitely is composed by a lot of actors and performers that will make every scenes alive and majestic.

Now that you all know them, are you ready to experience The Phantom of the Opera?  The show starts tomorrow August 25, at the CCP Main Theater, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City.  Tickets are now available at TicketWorld 891-9999 or log on to www.ticketworld.com.ph.

And it is official.  Marvel and ABC Network announced the official TV spinoff for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  And it is actually something we all expect.  Here's an exclusive announcement from Deadline:

EXCLUSIVE: ABC has ordered a pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D, a live-action series from The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon, Marvel TV and ABC Studios.

According to the report, Joss Whedon is co-writing the show with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Joss is also set to direct the pilot and some other episodes if the schedule permits it.

Scarlett Johansson's Blackwidow is a prominent S.H.I.E.L.D. agent but there is no word if she will be a regular cast for the series.  Let's cross our fingers.

There are still no details to how will the show run or will characters from the cinematic universe will appear on the show. I for one is confident that there will be appearance from the MCU but possibly not on a regular basis. [SPOILER STARTS] It is also possible that Jesse Bradford (Agent Benny) and Lizzy Caplan (Agent Claire) will be included to the cast since they are now S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents. [SPOILERS END]

Looking forward for this show. Will get you guys updated for more.

A Twisted Return to Hogwarts: Potted Potter Review

Saw Potted Potter last Tuesday and just like what I expected, I enjoyed it a lot. I really thought before that the magic of the books stopped in the movies but I guess J.K. Rowling's legacy will live on different ways you can't even expect and this show is just one of them.

Potted Potter is a story telling session fused with stand up comedy act conceived by Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner. When I first heard of it, I'm quite puzzled on how will they cram all those 7 books to a very brief 70 minute show. In that case, every book has an average of 10 minutes each? How is that possible? Well you won't really understand it until you see it for yourself. Surprisingly, 70 minutes is enough to give entertainment to the audience and make everybody laugh and have a good time. There are wizard battles, dragon, Nagini and even the famous Quidditch is inserted on the show where audience is given the chance to participate. Ha! You really need to see that part of the show because it is totally fun.

I love both of the actors featured in the show. Jesse Briton and Gary Trainor carried the whole performance excellently. Both actor has good chemistry and they have managed to forge a perfect rapport with the audience. I also noticed that some scenes are improvised and ad libs are performed based on how the audience will react to a certain dialogue or joke. The actors came well prepared of local facts that they can use to personalize the script and make it a little unique for Manila.

But if people are expecting that they will be educated with Harry Potter facts, you may not get it. Because this show is strongly parodied. It is so twisted that you can't hardly see the HP reference if you never read the books or watch the movies. In other words, only Harry Potter fans can fully enjoy it.

on the scene: Jesse Briton with Me.  Got a photo shot with Gary Trainor but in some weird phenomena my friend who took the photo got hit by an unknown curse and it didn't come out good.  For the record she took the photo twice :P

It is a fun watch to say the least. It is definitely a must watch for all Potterheads out there. Guys you only have until September 2 to see it. Grab your tickets now at Ticketworld 891-9999 or log on to www.ticketworld.com.ph.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Trailer Now Online!!!

Paramount Pictures releases the very first trailer for their new action fantasy starring Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans), Jeremy Renner (Bourne Legacy) and Famke Janssen (Taken 2).  Following the tradition of twisted Fairy Tale movies such as Red Riding Hood and Snow White and the Huntsman, here is Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

15 years after their traumatic gingerbread-house incident, siblings Hansel and Gretel have become a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world.

I'm already liking what this trailer is showing so far. But I admit that I'm still looking for more. So probably in the few weeks or months, we can have more stills and extended trailers. But just don't reveal too much. I'm happy that Jeremy Renner is getting the break he really deserves and after The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy, he is absolutely the next big thing in action Hollywood. I'm also glad to see Gemma in the big screen. I know she did some movies lately but most of them are quite not that famous like her last movies like Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans. Now she is coming back on a potential box office hit, I wish her all the best.

Directed and written by Tommy Wirkola, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters are set to premiere in US on January 11, 2013 from Paramount Pictures. Stay tuned for an update for the local release through Solar Entertainment and United International Pictures.

Iron Man 3 Armor in SDCC is not Mark VIII. It is Mark XLVII

Remember the Iron Man armor revealed last SDCC?  The one with too much Gold scheme on the design.  Like what I expect, it is not he mark VIII armor.  An exclusive scoop through Latino Review reveals a very unexpected turn on the franchise. The armor is actually...

Mark XLVII.  To those who don't know how to read roman numerals, XLVII stands for 47.  So are you confused already?  Don't worry, you are not alone.  I for one is confused to what should I feel about this new development.  So Mandarin is a force Tony Stark can't handle alone.  According to the scoop, after Mark VII, he created 40 new suits. Out of the 40, 39 are remotely controlled by Tony who is piloting the 40th suit.  The 40 armors are deliberately identical to hide Tony among the bunch.

Looks like the long been waited armor wars is already happening.  But a part of me is quite not buying this concept. Is it a cheap trick to populate Tony's Armory with more armors?  I hope not.  I will wait for more updates.

Coming in cinemas on May 2013, Iron Man 3 is from Marvel Studio to be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.

Rise of the Guardians Trailer 2 Finally Reveals Jack Frost Footage

We've seen the first trailer about the upcoming film by Dreamworks animation, Rise of the Guardians that features Santa Clause (Alec Baldwin), Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher Cohen), Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman) and Sandman.  But on this new trailer, a new character is introduced.  Everybody meet Jack Frost voiced by Chris Pine.

He is a supernatural being much like the guardians. But unlike the others he is a loner. He too is immortal, eternally young, charismatic, and smart. He has an incredible weather control powers that he control with his magical staff; he can call upon the wind , storms, cold and snow. However he is a spirit of mischief and chaos personified, that makes him unsuitable to becoming a full pledged Guardian. Until the day he discovers his true purpose that will bring him to what is written on his destiny.

Hmmm I kinda thinking of something more out of the box but this premise just looks fine.  A young recruit guardian destined for greatness could be a cliche but it works every time.  I hope I'm not wrong.

Coming on cinemas in November 21, 2012 from from Dreamworks Animation to be Distributed by Solar Entertainment through United International Pictures.

Set photos from Surrey already surfaced online courtesy by Dailymail UK from the set of Thor: The Dark World.  We got a lot of interesting photos including the film's main stars Jaimie Alexander (Lady Sif) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson).  And yes, we also have the first look on Thor's new costume.  See the photos after the jump.

Thor costumes from the first Thor film, The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World

Thor versus Sif?

Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif

definitely one of the villains but there are still no details about them. Possibly a Dark Elf but this is stil lto be confirmed.

Looks like Thor is slowly becoming Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.  Not really sure if that is a good thing or not but I suppose Alan Taylor knows what he is doing.  Looking forward for more developments on this film.  Set to premiere on November 8, 2013 (US), Thor: The Dark World is from Marvel Studios, distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Encantadia Short: Party Pilipinas VOX Edition

As much as I'm still waiting for the return of my favorite fantasy series Encantadia, up to this moment there are are still no concrete announcement about its return on television. Rumors are spreading that it may not be even a TV series but possibly a movie. I don't have a problem with that. As long as it will be directed by Mark Reyes who is the brain behind the series' success back in 2005. But while we are waiting, a friend from LionHearTV shared a very interesting video. I'm very sure that Hardcore Encantadiks (fans) will be thrilled with this video. Watch the video after the jump.

The video is created under thedirection of Mark Reyes, used for Party Pilipinas VOX edition segment. The Sanggres are comprised by Francheska Farr as Pirena, Julie Anne San Jose as Danaya, Rachelle Anne Go as Amihan and Kyla as Alena. Personally, I'm overflowing with joy just to see this short. To see the 4 Sanggres is definitely a pleasure to all Encantadiks who followed the series before and I will hug Direk Mark Reyes for that.

But if I will go nitpicking, there are a lot of things that caught my attention like Pirena (Fire) and Danaya (Earth) using Lightning based attacks and Alena (Water) using Fire based attacks. The action scenes are not really that good. These actors definitely needs more training if they really want to be cast on the series. Regarding the casting, surprisingly 3 of them passed my standards. Francheska, Julie Anne and Rachelle Anne fits well as warrior princesses but I suggest that Francheska to be cast as Amihan while Rachelle Anne to be cast as Alena. Kyla tried but she really needs to try much harder.  Julie Anne San Jose as Danaya is spot on casting though I believe Julie Anne still needs more training in acting.

If I will be asked, I hope GMA will choose to revive Encantadia as a weekly series rather than an everyday one. Special effects driven series needs more time for post production and if they want a good quality series, they will stick to a weekly one.
